 Istanbul,
a city of 13.000.000 people, offers a variety of residence options. Most
ex-patriates prefer to live along the Bosphorus and enjoy the magnificent
views it offers. Others may live in nearby locations, in Etiler or Ulus
on the European side, close to the two bridges connecting Europe and Asia.
There are also a variety of compounds available which offer high quality
accomodations and convenience. Alkent Sarı Konaklar and Büyükhanlı (in
Etiler) are fine examples.
Rents are higher
than many comparable cities in Europe - so, don't be surprised! This is
because the most highly favored residential areas are quite few.
These are the
Bosphorus (Cihangir, Ayazpaşa, Ortaköy, Arnavutköy. Bebek, Rumelihisarı,
Baltalimanı, Emirgan, İstinye, Yeniköy, Tarabya, Kireçburnu and Büyükdere
on the European side), Etiler, Ulus, Levent, Akatlar, Maçka and Nişantaşı.
Average rent
for a 3-bedroom seaview apartment in good locations would be around $2500
to $3000. These would be 180 to 220 m2 in size with three to four bedrooms,
offer unobstructed Bosphorus view,a balcony and good quality bathrooms
and kitchen.
If you insist
on Bosphorus view, you are advised to give up looking for "new" buildings.
New construction
around the Bosphorus is forbidden to protect its beauty. Most of the buildings
along the Bosphorus are over 30 years old. Your best bet may be renovated
apartments or historic houses. And these are rather rare.
